Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE)

Soil vapor extraction (SVE)

Soil vapor extraction (SVE) is a common method of soil remediation used to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from contaminated soil. SVE is an in situ (in-place) treatment technique that involves the extraction of contaminated vapors from the soil using a vacuum system. SVE is effective for treating soils contaminated with low to moderate levels of VOCs. It is particularly useful for sites with shallow soil contamination and can be used as a standalone remediation method or in combination with other techniques such as bioremediation or chemical treatment.

The effectiveness of SVE depends on several factors, including the type and concentration of contaminants, soil type, and groundwater conditions. SVE may take several months or years to complete, and monitoring is required to ensure that the remediation process is effective.

Our Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) system uses Oil ring vacuum pumps which are more powerful than blower systems and we can achieve high vacuum up to 28 inch Hg.

How Does Soil Vapor Extraction Work?

An SVE system typically consists of

Extraction Wells:

Drilled vertically into the contaminated zone to draw vapors.

Vacuum System:

Creates a negative pressure zone, inducing vapor flow towards the extraction wells

Treatment System:

Processes the extracted vapors to remove contaminants before discharge. This may involve activated carbon adsorption, thermal oxidation, or other methods.

Monitoring Wells:

Track the progress of remediation and ensure complete VOC removal.

Benefits of SVE

Effective Remediation:

Proven technology for removing a wide range of VOCs from soil.

Faster Cleanup:

Achieves quicker results compared to some traditional methods.

Minimal Disruption:

Less intrusive than excavation, minimizing disruption to the site.

Cost-Effective:

Offers a cost-competitive solution for many remediation projects.

Versatile Applications:

Applicable to a variety of site conditions and contaminant types.

Applications of SVE

Leaking Underground Storage Tanks (LUSTs):

Address gasoline, diesel, and other petroleum contamination.

Former Industrial Sites:

Remediate chlorinated solvents, trichloroethylene (TCE), and other industrial chemicals.

Fuel Spills:

Clean up accidental releases of gasoline, diesel, and heating oil.

Brownfield Redevelopment:

Prepare contaminated land for safe reuse.
